Topic: Gild and mount
Question
I have about 50 prismatic letters 6" tall cut on a CNC router that I must gild and mount on an exterior painted steel beam. They are roman serif with a prismatic face. I am hand painting (no spray equipment) the primers and finished edges. This is very labor intensive! Can I "dip" the letters in primer? Or could I spray them with Krylon and expect them to hold up? Would the Sign•Grip adhesive be recommended for mounting?
Answer
You have your work cut out for you. If you are going to gild these letters then you must smooth out the surface, there will be no getting around that. What you want to do is make the process as efficient as possible. If you have not purchased your Sign•Foam yet I would recommend going to the 18lb. You will spend more for the raw material but the cell structure will be much tighter and there will be less texture to deal with. You can dip the letters, but you will have to find just the right primer for the job. It must be thick enough to cover the texture yet then enough to flow evenly. You can spray Krylon but it is rather low in solids so you’ll be looking at several coats.

If you have not tried our Sign•Prime yet this is an ideal job for it. It will leave you a gilding surface in just one coat. It’s the perfect viscosity for brushing on or dipping, although the dip method may take some practice.

As far as mounting, the Sign•Grip 83T1 will to the job perfectly.
