| Topic: Vinyl letters | | Question | | Best application method of latex paint for smooth surface to accommodate vinyl letters. | | Answer | You are heading in the wrong direction. Vinyl letters want smooth, hard, surfaces to adhere to, like glass or metal. The surface of Sign•Foam is too textured to allow vinyl to stick to its’ raw surface. Latex, by nature, is rubbery and flexible. This flexibility will cause it to conform to the cell structure of the Sign•Foam as opposed to filling it in. Even several coats of latex will leave a surface unsuited for vinyl letters.
For successful application of vinyl lettering, first apply a single coat of Sign•Prime. Lightly sand with 320 wet/dry sandpaper. This will give you a surface smooth enough to work with. From hear a quality lettering enamel will give you the hardness need for good vinyl adhesion.
